Project overview

Located in Burlington, Ontario, the Joseph Brant Museum stands as a tribute to local history and Indigenous heritage. Initially conceptualized in the early 2000s, the redevelopment officially launched in 2009, culminating in a major transformation completed in 2019. The revitalized museum now offers a modernized and expanded space to better serve the community and share the region’s rich cultural legacy.

MTE's Involvement

MTE was proud to provide both building and structural engineering services for this important cultural project.

Our Building engineering team conducted Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) sampling to satisfy the requirements of the Canada Green Building Council’s LEED Canada for Commercial Interiors (LEED Canada-CI Version 1.0) certification. This work ensured the project met environmental performance and indoor health standards.

Our Structural engineering team was responsible for the full structural design of the new museum facility. In addition to design services, we coordinated closely with the broader project team to ensure effective integration of all building systems. This included performing structural reviews and providing on-site support through regular site visits during construction.

The project posed several unique structural challenges. One of the most complex elements involved the temporary relocation of the original museum building and its precise repositioning onto the new structure. Another challenge was the design of the front entrance canopy, which featured a visually striking and structurally complex geometric form. This canopy was fabricated using tubular structural steel, requiring close collaboration and precision engineering.
