The Kitchener Green Residential Subdivision in Kitchener, Ontario, has been recognized as one of Environmental Journal’s Top 25 Remediation Projects of 2026, ranking #10 in its inaugural issue highlighting Canada’s largest and most impactful cleanup initiatives. The $63 million project reflects a significant effort to transform a historically impacted site into a future residential community.
Owned by the Mattamy Tru-Villa Partnership, the approximately 80-hectare property includes three former aggregate pits and a non-registered landfill identified by the MECP in 1986. The redevelopment focuses on comprehensive environmental remediation to support safe, long-term residential use.
MTE Consultants has played a key role in advancing the remediation and redevelopment of the site, providing environmental engineering services throughout the project. Working alongside partners including Mattamy, Tru-Villa, VanRooyen Earthmoving Ltd., J.D. Barnes Limited, and DS Consultants Ltd., MTE has supported the assessment and management of site materials, coordinated environmental site assessments, and contributed to the development of detailed remediation strategies.
Over the course of the project, extensive remediation efforts have been undertaken, including the removal of landfilled materials and the assessment and management of more than 1.4 million cubic metres of soil. MTE’s work has included ongoing sampling, groundwater monitoring, and oversight of remediation activities to ensure compliance and long-term site stability.
Through this collaborative and technically complex effort, the project is enabling the transformation of a challenging site into land suitable for residential development—supporting future growth while demonstrating a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.
