MTE's Involvement
MTE proudly provided structural, civil, surveying, geotechnical, and environmental engineering services in support of the design and construction of 55 Franklin.
A key objective of the Franklin Flats development was to evaluate different construction methodologies for multi-unit residential buildings. Four buildings of identical size were constructed side-by-side, each utilizing a different structural system. By maintaining consistent factors such as site conditions, architectural design, and regulatory requirements, the project team was able to conduct a direct comparison of construction approaches and overall performance.
Across the development, a range of structural systems were explored, including mass timber, light wood framing, masonry/precast concrete, full precast, and cast-in-place concrete. This controlled comparison allowed the developer to assess differences in construction efficiency, cost, durability, and environmental impact, helping to identify solutions that support the delivery of high-quality, affordable housing.
The development incorporates several sustainability-focused features aimed at improving environmental performance and long-term building efficiency. These include photovoltaic solar panels, rainwater collection systems for greywater use, and a high-performance building envelope.
