MTE's Involvement
MTE’s structural engineering team was involved in all aspects of the pursuit, contributing to presentations and assisting with budgeting before the award of the contract for the 164,000 square feet greenfield project.
The three-storey structure was designed with reinforced concrete and a conventional spread and raft foundation. The steel framed mechanical penthouse features clear spans of approximately 15 meters (50 feet). The team produced designs and details for the lateral force resisting system that accommodated seismic forces. The reinforced concrete walls of the elevator and stairwells, as well as the steel bracing of the penthouse, were also proportioned accordingly. One major challenge on this project was arriving at a cost-effective structural strategy to allow construction to occur in the sequence required, given that the site slopes nearly 5 meters (16 feet) from front to back.
The team worked with trade contractors and their engineering consultants to create and execute a workable plan that was within budget and had minimal impact on schedule.
The team also needed to address concerns related to noise and vibration control for the operating rooms and medical imaging areas. They were able to overcome this through the use of isolation joints and isolation slabs
