MTE's Involvement
MTE has played a key role in supporting the environmental remediation and redevelopment of the site. The project includes the assessment and relocation of existing fill to designated areas in accordance with detailed materials management and grading plans. Over the course of the project, multiple large-scale Phase One and Phase Two Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs), ex-situ remediation programs, and Records of Site Condition have been completed or are ongoing, with a risk assessment planned for a portion of the site.
Remediation efforts have been extensive, including the full removal of landfilled material and the excavation, movement, screening, sorting, and environmental assessment of more than 1.4 million cubic metres of on-site soil. Over the past nine years, MTE has collected and analyzed more than 20,000 soil samples for contaminants of concern and facilitated the removal of over 275,000 metric tonnes of impacted soil. In addition to these efforts, MTE has contributed to the development of the Materials Management Plan, provided full-time oversight of pit rehabilitation and sampling, supported ex-situ remediation and confirmatory testing, and implemented ongoing groundwater monitoring programs.
