Township of Southwold

Project overview

Designed to support the community’s emergency response needs for years to come, the Township of Southwold’s new fire station in Talbotville, Ontario, was delivered for approximately $4.3 million—a notably cost-effective investment compared to many recently constructed fire halls in neighbouring municipalities.

The new station features three drive-through apparatus bays capable of housing up to six emergency vehicles, improving operational efficiency and response times. Dedicated space has also been included for firefighters’ bunker gear, along with provisions for a future decontamination washing system to help reduce firefighters’ exposure to harmful carcinogens. To further enhance emergency operations, the Township constructed a new entrance from Talbot Line, allowing emergency vehicles to drive directly into the bays rather than backing in from Sunset Drive, improving both safety and functionality.

MTE's Involvement

As the prime consulting engineer, MTE provided multidisciplinary engineering services throughout the project, supporting every stage from initial site investigations through construction completion.

Prior to design, MTE completed a topographic survey and geotechnical investigation to establish the site conditions and inform the design process. The team was responsible for the civil engineering design, including site servicing, grading, stormwater management, and the design of a new on-site wastewater system to service the facility.

Throughout construction, MTE provided contract administration, site inspection, and materials testing to help ensure quality and compliance with project specifications. Because the existing fire station needed to remain operational during construction, MTE developed and supported a phased construction strategy that allowed emergency services to continue uninterrupted.

Additional project services included structural engineering support for the demolition of the existing fire station, guidance to ensure compliance with Ontario’s Excess Soil Regulation, and a photometric assessment to confirm appropriate site lighting levels for safety and operational performance.
