Why Roundabouts Continue to Gain Momentum in Traffic Design

Roundabouts are quickly becoming a preferred solution for traffic management, and it’s easy to see why.

Across municipalities in the region, roundabouts are being recognized for their ability to improve safety, reduce congestion, and create more efficient intersections compared to traditional signalized or stop-controlled layouts.

As this shift continues, MTE has had the opportunity to contribute to the planning and design of several roundabouts in surrounding communities. Through this work, our Civil Engineering teams have seen firsthand how thoughtful roundabout design can positively impact both driver experience and overall road safety.

A Safer Approach to Intersections

One of the biggest reasons roundabouts are growing in popularity is their proven safety performance. By changing how vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists move through an intersection, roundabouts help reduce both the likelihood and severity of collisions.

Here are some of the key safety features that make roundabouts an effective solution:

Reduced Speeds by Design

Roundabouts naturally slow vehicles as drivers enter and circulate through the intersection. Lower speeds give drivers more time to react and significantly reduce the severity of crashes when they do occur. Features such as raised pedestrian and cycling crossings further support speed control and enhance safety for all users.

Fewer Conflict Points

Traditional intersections can create numerous conflict points where vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists cross paths. Roundabouts simplify these interactions by reducing the number of crossing movements, which lowers the risk of collisions and improves predictability for everyone using the intersection.

Clearer Sightlines

Without traffic signals or stop signs, roundabouts offer improved visibility. Clear sightlines allow drivers to better anticipate other vehicles and pedestrians, making navigation more intuitive and reducing confusion—particularly at busy intersections.

Pedestrian- and Cyclist-Friendly Design

Modern roundabouts are designed with all road users in mind. Pedestrian refuge islands, well-marked crosswalks, and slower vehicle speeds help create safer crossings. At locations with higher pedestrian volumes, features such as Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) can be incorporated to provide additional visibility and control for pedestrian crossings.

Improved Traffic Flow & Sustainability

By keeping vehicles moving instead of stopping at traffic lights, roundabouts help reduce congestion and delays. This continuous flow not only saves time for drivers but also reduces fuel consumption and vehicle emissions, contributing to a more sustainable approach to traffic management.
