Project overview

Hanlon Creek Park’s splash pad has long been a beloved feature enjoyed by the Guelph community during the warmer months. When the original washrooms and splash pad reached the end of their lifecycle, the City of Guelph seized the opportunity not only to replace the facilities but also to enhance them with improved accessibility and sustainable design features.

The updated design includes expanded asphalt pathways, accessible parking, and ramps to ensure ease of access throughout the park. Two new buildings were constructed to house the splash pad’s mechanical systems and public washrooms. Complementing a nearby solar pergola, solar panels installed on the washroom roof now allow the splash pad and its holding tank to operate entirely on renewable energy.

MTE's Involvement

MTE supported the City of Guelph by providing civil and structural engineering expertise throughout the demolition, design, and construction phases of the park renewal.

Our civil engineering team laid the groundwork with site grading, servicing, and stormwater management design. Since the site was originally designed for a splash pad, the existing sanitary and water infrastructure—which also served the original washroom—was reused, relocated, and extended to accommodate the new washroom building and the additional mechanical room.

Before designing the new structures, our structural engineers conducted a thorough assessment of the existing 675-square-foot facility to plan for its demolition. This original single structure included a mechanical room housing the splash pad’s equipment.

We then designed the new facility as two separate buildings connected by a large roof overhang, which doubles as a shelter and supports solar panels powering the splash pad. One building features three accessible washrooms, with the central, larger washroom serving as a universal toilet room. The second building contains a spacious mechanical room, electrical room, and storage for splash pad equipment and maintenance supplies.

Throughout the project, our team provided support during the tendering process and conducted construction inspections for both civil and structural works. The revitalized park reopened just in time for the Guelph community to enjoy the splash pad throughout the summer.
