Project overview

The Huron Road and Woodbine Avenue Roundabout is located at a key intersection in Kitchener near Parkvale Drive, within a rapidly growing area of the city. Implemented following a 2009–2010 Environmental Assessment, the project was designed to address increasing traffic volumes associated with ongoing residential and commercial development along the Huron Road corridor.

The roundabout was introduced as a long-term traffic management solution to improve vehicle operations, reduce congestion, and enhance overall intersection safety. Its design supports efficient traffic flow while accommodating pedestrians and cyclists within a high-use urban environment.

The intersection is situated within a high-traffic area that continues to evolve as surrounding development intensifies. In recent years, the City of Kitchener and regional partners have placed increased emphasis on road user safety, including pedestrian-focused initiatives such as the 2025 pedestrian safety pilot program targeting roundabout operations across the city.

The roundabout design reflects these priorities through improved sightlines, controlled vehicle speeds, and clearly defined crossing locations, contributing to safer interactions between vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists.

MTE's Involvement

MTE provided full civil engineering services for the project, supporting the intersection from initial planning through construction. This included municipal engineering input to the Environmental Assessment process, preliminary and detailed design, and construction-phase support.

MTE’s work focused on developing a functional and constructible roundabout design that met municipal standards, addressed traffic demands, and integrated safely into the surrounding road network. Coordination with municipal stakeholders and regulatory agencies ensured the project aligned with long-term transportation and safety objectives for the Huron Road corridor.

The completed roundabout provides a durable and efficient intersection solution that supports continued growth in the area while improving traffic operations and safety. The project remains an integral part of Kitchener’s transportation network and reflects the City’s ongoing commitment to safer, more resilient roadway infrastructure.
